June 13, 2018 As we quickly approach the Summer Solstice it is now a safe bet to make some more precise water predictions for the upcoming prime summer fishing season. Our peak flows on the Snake River occurred two weeks ago topping out around 27,200 cfs in the Snake River canyon, a healthy flush but not a record runoff at all. Currently tribs are on the drop; settling and clearing will increase over the next 3 weeks with most runoff ending by early July, a couple weeks sooner than previously thought. Jackson lake is nearly full at 96% and this bodes well for later in the season; good clean, clear and cold flows coming from the dam make for happy trout and hatches. The main stem of he Snake should be fishable in 2-3 weeks but typically needs to settle more, therefore good consistent action may be hard to find until later in July. August should have the river in prime shape and flowing just under 4000cfs at Moose, this level creates nice side channels and draws healthy cutthroats up in the park sections. Drainages to our south (Green, NF and Salt) are on the drop and while fishing is decent there now those areas will fish very good over the next month or so. Currently flows are off color (1.5fov) but fishable with wet flies. A few fish coming to the surface but until the major hatches begin its 90% a wet fly show. We expect healthy "better than average" summer flows here so hopper season should not be a bust. We love our lake fishing and our guides have reported some awesome days lately but as the busiest time of the season quickly approaches it is nice to see some rivers coming on board a bit earlier than expected.
